Just got this last evenin. At first I thought it was gonna be a drilled round hole but got it cleaned up a little and realized it's more of a punch.

Any thoughts... is it common?

I'm guessing, after a quick web search, Spanish-Mexican (?) silver, 1 real.... and looks like 1804 for a date.

2 1/2 hours of hunting with darkness quickly approaching and finally, I had something in my pocket. :tongue3:

Very nice find! It's always the last place you look LOL.

Yea, seems like I'm only "late getting home" when I haven't found anything... all I needed was just one treasure.

Aaaaah the anticipation during the ride home... both about what the manky little coin is going to be and the scolding I'm gonna get because it was a school night!

Gotta love it!

Nice half reale , it's common to see coins holed by hammering a "square " nail threw the coin and threading them on a string for safe keeping . Many more to you

Looks like someone drove a square nail through it. That's my guess

That is kind of odd. But with my limited knowledge of old coins , I do know that sometimes people would cut or break foreign currency in colonial times to get equavalent value. It's odd that it is punched out , but perhaps it was done to make "correct change".

Or perhaps it was once found before by a hunter like us, and put on a necklace, then re-lost. That seems far fetched , but stranger things have happened.

Now that's cool.congrats.

holed or punched reales (or early seateds) are fun to find. Even though numismatically that runs them down perhaps, yet from a history perspective, a cool little touch, to add to the story.

Yes, as CMD stated above, a 1/2 real (18 mm in diameter versus a 1 real at 20 mm).
Either way, still .896 silver. Great catch !
Don...........

Awesome find. Did you find that in salt water? Looks like the silver coins we find in N. J. in the salt water. Regardless that is an awesome find. Congrats!
