I had about an hour to kill before picking my daughter up from her job today and hit a small field that doesn't look to have much age or history . I dug four or five clad coins before I was surprised to pulled this piece of coin which was at about 5 inches. Looks to be part of a Spanish silver coin ? Can anyone help ID this ?

Don't kid yourself. That's a HUGE clue to the area.

Loose lips sink ships.

Good Luck with further hunting.

Nice cob!! Thanks , I thought it might be a cob, but didn't know if it was a pieces of a round coin ? I'll have to go back when I can search it with more time.

Bolivian cob 1 reale! Good job!... kane 23

What a great surprise :icon_thumleft:

Nice find! Definitely a Potosi, "Pillars and Waves" 1 Real. The "P" mintmark and the denomination are very clear. The rest of the strike is too muddled for me to see an assayer or a date, but from its style, I would guess it dates from the second half of the 17th century. It cannot be earlier than 1652, because that is when the Pillars and Waves type first was issued.

Just getting to read responses, thanks for the great info all, I hope to get back to this little field here on Martha's Vineyard and will post anything worthy ?. Some of the other fields I regularly hunt have produced some great finds as well.

Yes, that is a definite cob. That site could hold the holy grail of USA silver coins...Pine Tree shilling. :headbang:
