Speaking of silverware

Last night I pulled a mangled spoon out of an ash hopper on a boiler. As you could imagine it was pretty mangled. I don't know much about silverware. I haven't really had time to clean it but on the back is part of a brand and copyright mark and the numbers "18/8".
:?: :?: Anyone have any idea what 18/8 means? :?: :?:
