Hi All,
I Think it's brass, whats puzzling is the part that's mushroomed from being beat on with something? Found at a home site that was a hospital during the War of the Rebellion.

Looks like part of a machine. Very heavy spiral spring on the bottom.

Really looks like the front of this 1500s barrel tap, with that piece in front to give you a flat surface to tap it in. Looks like mine took a lot of pounding. And I doubt mine is that old. Thanks everyone for the help!
