Found this at an 1850s farmstead site today.
Tumbled it for an hour and got some good detail.
Never seen one like this and help is appreciated.

That's not square shaped. It's diamond shaped!

Seriously though, I wish I could help. Nice detail on the button (Maltese cross = Germanic reference), too bad there's no back mark and I wish that everyone could take a photo of a small object as well as you do.

I would think it more likely 1 half of a cufflink. There would have been 4 of them to a set. A pair would have been connected by a small chain between the loops.
