AI Overview:

This image is fake. It is an AI-generated image accompanying a viral internet hoax. The story about a 19th-century stagecoach found lodged in a Utah canyon with a lost railroad payroll of gold coins is not supported by any credible historical records or news reports. Fact-checkers and social media users have flagged the post as "AI garbage" and a "hoax".

A wooden stagecoach would not remain structurally intact and wedged high in a canyon for over 100 years, especially if subjected to the force of a flash flood.

No reputable archaeological or news organization has reported on such a find.

Anyone know who started the story, or why? Seems artificially promoted too.

Although there are much earlier folklore stories of a similar nature, this particular story with accompanying fake AI-generated images seems to have begun spreading on social media in August 2025. First mention that I could find was posted in the ‘I grew up in Utah’ Facebook group by Cynthia Carr on 16 August 2025.

The story went viral earlier this month, being spread by various spam networks such as ‘historyinmemes’ on X and given false credence by the ‘Archaeology Word’ online magazine and various news sites.

It’s not known who created the images, but they’re what is known as ‘AI Slop’, used by spammers as sensational clickbait under the guise of educational storytelling to gain ‘likes’, ‘shares’ and generate advertising revenue. It can be quite profitable and the best (worst) bit is that it requires very little effort.

You don’t need any kind of expertise to create these kinds of fake pictures. Anyone can do it using AI platforms such as Midjourney, ChatGPT, or Bing Image Creator. With a bit more expertise, there are other more sophisticated programs with the ability to create fake videos.

I produced this image by simply typing “Unicorn wedged in a Utah canyon” as a prompt in Microsoft’s Bing Image Generator:

Did you just do this to Terry's hopeful beliefs that they actually found this stagecoach. :laughing7:

I was reading a relatively modern book recently and thought it sounded rather strange, I couldn't decide if it was simply poorly written or entirely AI generated. Let us all give thanks to having been alive before AI for as long as we had, but its over now, and it's only going to get harder to sort the real from the fake. And one day, you will genuinely not be able to tell. The only truth will be what you see in the real world. Luckily we live in the real world by default.

Another example of an AI generated Lenny!

Crushed, completely crushed! :laughing7:

So what you’re saying is that finding a real treasure would probably be written off as an AI hoax?? :icon_scratch::laughing7:

Just Because the Pictures are AI, Does Not Necessarily Mean Pieces of a Stagecoah & Coins were not found.
I've seen Many BS Pictures added to True Stories,'Simply Because Idiots
Feel they Need to Add Pictures They Don't Have, & Exaggerate the Story for drama.

They are also not above Showing Pictures Like That
When all that was Found is a iron Relic from a Wagon & A hand Full of Coins, in a Ditch.

Or a Picture of Treasure Chest Flowing over with Gold, When a Shoe Box of Stolen Items is Found.

So I'd say Though This One seems to Be Fake, it needs More Research as to If a Few Gold coins along with a Hitch from a Stagecoach was Found in a Ditch. :tongue3:Unless You Believe Naysayers 100%
Or Know the Person who Wrote the Story :coffee2:
