Just wash the dirt off no need to get pretty with it at all. Rule of thumb copper pipe will be #2, clean bare wire even green will be #1, old dirty sheet copper will go as #3. Now the brass, if you take a grinder and score it and it shows yellow well that's what it is. Threaded valves are red brass, elbows are C-metal or in between the red and yellow. Taps are taps unless totally taken apart, old taps can even be red brass, and take the handles off and the valve seats out.
