Steel Wheats?

I'm just curious if anyone has ever dug a steel wheat. At first I thought to my self "I bet there are a TON of steel wheats out there, because most coin hunters pass on steel targets, but then I realized that a zinc coated steel coin probably wouldn't fair so well, unless it was in a VERY dry environment.

So, has any one dug one, or even tried to find one?

People have found them but it's mostly dumb luck. You would have to dig every crappy iron hit the size of a penny. I saw someone dig a spill that had one in it.

What kind of shape was it in Rob?

I've found a few. All were found with a pin pointer in a pocket spill. They were mixed in with other coins. All were rusty and of little value numismatically.

It wasn't in horrible condition, pitted a little bit, but it rust stained the silver quarter pretty bad. Luckily it was just a Washington. They may seem neat to find for the historical finders value but they sure are not worth anything.

There were a few steel wheat pennies minted in 44 and also a few copper pennies in 43, both have value. Thought I found a 43 copper but unable to verify due to condition.
