STONE KNAPPED BIRD EFFIGYS( YOU WILL LOVE THIS)

There has always been a debate about bird effigys that had been knapped out of stone. 1st let me say that the Eagle effigy that we see so much of is not ancient, but these were found on a controlled dig.

Yes, there are some different types of effigies that are authentic. Missouri & Illinois has some unique styles.

The questionable ones that show up from time to time in older collections are usually made out of Texas chert. They show feather/notching along the wings, a head turned right/left so you can see the beak, etc. I've never seen one of those from the Midwest that was authentic, and I don't know any Texas diggers that have found any. They were sold during the era of long road trips vacations post WW2 back in the 50-80's at rest stops and gas stations along with Apache or Navajo arrowheads with notches ground into the stone.

The other questionable ones are made from old broken points, and quite often the more recent flaking is recognizable.

I always thought that these along with double or triple notched points and mustache Simpsons are all modern and possibly some type of elaborate story was made up so they would be considered extremely rare for money purposes. All the ones I mentioned above to me served no purpose for their way of life. I could be wrong, this is just my opinion.

one I personally found in Missouri, not a bird either practice piece or making 2 points from single piece of flint.

"Controlled dig" is an interesting term. When I went to an organized hunt in Virginia a few years ago, one guy found a NEW US buckle someone had planted for somebody to find. I would not be able to tell a real flint effigy from one made last month! I tried flint knapping a couple years ago and will proudly tell you I made big rocks into smaller ones!

I agree on the Simpson Moustache, always a sketchy story on most I've seen. Anyway if they are real I'd type them a Wheeler anyway. Nothing about them says Simpson. IMHO

When I stated controlled dig I mean a archeology dig at a well known site. This was not a payed dig with a shaker table and backhoe.

That is funny, but the sad thing is there are people that will buy it. You can find real artifacts on eBay, but you had better know the seller and done business with them before. What I posted is done by noted archeology folks and I don't think they would risk their name for a piece of junk.

Hi all, saw this website years ago but just now signing on. I hunt Native American tools and points and found this stone on my property a couple of months ago. I'm not sure if this is the correct thread for this, but do some of you see the same thing I see chipped, carved etc..in the stone?

Looks like the BatMan emblem. Probably carved by The Invisible Woman. Everyone knows she has a crush on him.
