Here is a strange one. It looks pretty old, cast and crudely hand finished. Possibly could have come from some sort of ship or boat due to being found near the lake. It appears to have been attached to an iron ball, the drilled hole possibly was for lubrication. Any guesses are welcome. Thanks!!

When you look at a side-by-side comparison of the architecture of cut-away ball joint and the item in question, it's pretty hard to deny that its intended use was a ball joint of some nature ...

My first thought was a cap or top clamp for a ball joint of some sort. The two holes were used for threaded bolt studs to fit through.
Maybe from any variety of farming implements?

A "stay rod cap" from this site:

I would say that's a pretty darned close ID

It looks like the tractor steering stay rod cap but I wonder if they were brass? http://www.waltstractors.com/acatal...ts_Stay_Rod_Socket__Ball_Stud___Cap_1049.html

It appears as if a U-bolt was used to secure the cap on Goldivers item .

Well I believe this mystery is solved. I agree it is most likely a stay rod cap. Thanks very much to all who helped! :icon_thumleft:
