While searching a machine bag off halves today I noticed something strange. It's a frosted 1973. The edges are silver looking but the back has a gold hue.

It looks as if there is no mint mark as well. Any ideas?

I will post photos when I get home.

I have 2 Franklins which both have a gold hue, some sort of toning to the silver.

1973 they made NO silver half dollars, it is probrably plated or painted, but definately not silver. :icon_sunny:

The coin may have been gold plated, hence the gold tint. The silver edge may mean that the coin may be silver plated still.

I have a theory that early clad coins spent a lot of time in contact with silver. Being metal, some sort of electrolysis transferred a "micro-plating" in some cases, and certainly in an inconsistent manner.

Therefore the "silver" coloring on some coins from the 70's.

JMHO.

Keep on Rollin' !

Im guessing maybe someone did some type of coating on it. It almost looks like it was bead blasted or something.

I will probably toss it back in to see if someone else finds it. LOL
