Hello all..... I found this rock in the mountains of southern AZ.
It appears to be a very 'purpose built' tool for something...... just can't imagine what. Anyone come across something similar?

It is just under 2 1/2" long, 1 3/8" wide and 5/8" thick. The groove that goes across the one side, is very uniform and highly polished. All corners/edges are beveled on the thing.
Sorry for the crappy pics...... and thanks in advance for any thoughts/info!

The shaft abrader could be 200 years old or 1,000s of years old.
Exactly.... that is why I said this...
"I have never found evidence of NA presence before this in that region, but of course they were there... and what I do know is that this region was a favorite area for the Chiricahua Apache until they were pushed out. This artifact is quite obviously from before the territorial era , whether Apache or if it predates their arrival to the area, who knows? "

There is no question Native Americans were in this area, just as they were in every region of this country.... BUT.... I had never found any NA artifacts in THIS particular region after decades of covering it..... not an arrowhead, a pottery shard, nothing before this.
The white man left ample evidence of their time there during the last half of the 1800's to early 1900's (territorial era), and that is what I go in search of. The Apache controlled this area for centuries before being uprooted and run out in the 1860's.... It could be from their time ruling this region, or from whatever NA's were there before them.... AND.... I would say its very unlikely it was 'lost' post 1860's, based on this region getting filled with mines/miners by then.

I knew this was a very purpose made tool..... and knew it it was of NA pedigree. That is why I posted it here to specifically target the experts of NA artifacts.
I appreciate the input in identifying it, and happy to have found one!
