Strange star brass relic

Found this in central.VA near old home site and civil war activity. Any ideas I have heard could be CW related or can be post war horse tack. Any experts?

This looked familiar so I searched the forum and found this ID from a few years back made by member Creskol-

What you have is a harness ornament. Generally speaking, they were seen on hame covers. However, they were also used as saddle blanket ornaments. Hard to tell how old it is since the attachment wires are missing.
