Beach & Shallow Water Hunting
Hello All, I'm new to this site and to "treasure hunting." I've discovered some interesting finds recently in the same general vicinity of the North Carolina coast and I believe these pieces might be important and could be related to the Spanish shipwrecks of 1750. Looking for information on how to properly conserve these pieces and how to possibly identify which shipwreck they may be from. The pieces of the actual ship have iron nails as well as pegged holes that you will see in the pictures. I found many concretions including one concretion with a square head nail visible to the naked eye. I have found many pieces of what I believe to be shards of olive jars including one piece that appears to be a portion of the neck and mouth of the jar. I have also found numerous pieces of extremely thick glass including bottoms of bottles with pontil markings. I also found a very unique piece of very "bubbly" and iridescent glass with colors ranging from gold to purple. Any information you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

DownEastGirl, Welcome to tnet. Nice find. I'm sure some here, can help you date the bottle pieces. The olive jar pieces are a nice find. You should keep the location of the find to yourself and come to the cookout in FL on the 29th of April. I'm sure that you would get a lot of help in trying to date the wreck pieces.

Thanks for the welcome. Wish I could make it to Florida for the cookout. Maybe next year.

Oops - just saw this thread. Put your iron in a tub of fresh water asap. Your fifth and sixth photos are the rib of a sea turtle. The other pieces are very nice and not as easy to date with just pieces. Interesting finds!

Thank you so much for the information. I thought the sea turtle rib was some type of wood, lol. I have had the iron piece about two weeks and it is starting to crumble, should I still put it in water? Is well water okay?

Any fresh water is fine compared to air. I know guys who throw iron in a pond behind their house. Anything to keep it from crumbling. Here's a link to basic conservation. There are many other sites you can read about conservation with a quick Google search. Let me know if you want any other help. This forum is a great resource for you.
