It's been suggested that this might be a spike tomahawk. I thought I'd post here to see if anyone has an opinion.

Thanks!

Found in a cornfield rich in early history.

When found:

After some cleaning:

Any thoughts welcomed.

Thanks!

As far as I can tell, you might be absolutely correct. :) I see why it might look like the top of a tomahawk. The curve, the blade, the heavy middle but, only 4 inches in length? So, any suggestion is welcome. It's obviously iron. The area has a very long history. I've already pulled a boot pistol barrel and a few buttons/coins from the early 1800's.

Just trying to figure it out.

Thanks!

Could also be a plow-point or part of an early, horse drawn piece of farm equipment.

I also see the resemblance to the tomahawk w/point..so, time for research!

I thought about this being part of some horse drawn farm tool. But, the blade is so sharp as to almost make it fragile. I'm sure it's lost weight with all that rust. :) But, it still seems quite sharp.

I'm afraid that research on artifacts is just not my forte. That's why I'm putting it up here, there are so many wonderfully knowledgeable experts on EVERYTHING here! :)

Thanks!

How did u clean it? I have a few I need 2 do that 2

Well, I did soak it in vinegar for a while but mostly, I used electrolysis to loosen up the rust. Then, I just knocked it off a little at a time. Took a few days.

Hope that helps.

HH!

Being that this is steel, and if it was a tomahawk, it most likely would be a trade item.

However, there is no hole for a handle, which would preclude this as a tomahawk, pick or hand tool.

Therefore, it's ID is more than likely a farming related impliment....or a hand-wrought item such as a door lever or other yet undetermined item...

ACV is a wicked brew. I get flash rust right after but my electrolysis machine is amazing on restoration. It looks hand forged from and then the blade hammered flat. To me it looks as if was quickly made maybe as a hand tool for scraping. You may never know. Nice job on the cleaning.

Yep. You nailed it. This is without question in my mind a SPIKE. Keep in mind there is a chance that a bowl was there. I see a bump where it should be. Nice 18th century piece.
