Summer at the "Sweet Spot"
Hello Folks!
Thought I'd update you all on some trips I've been making down to my current summer hot-spot. This place is tons of fun!
Since I started dectecting two years ago, one of my favorite local spots has been the site of an old Victorian estate that was converted to a private school around the turn of the century. Lots of traffic, lots of age and seemingly untouched by a coil. Sounds great, right? It gets better.
Last fall I found out the place was sold to private developers. At first I panicked, because big red "No Tresspassing" signs went up all over the place, and I was personally kicked out the first time I arrived there to see what had happened. Well, I waited until spring, stewing over it all winter, and as soon as the ground thawed I went to the owner for permission. I couldn't believe what I saw when I showed up on the grounds -- they'd kept the original mansion and fixed it up, thank God, but they knocked down all the school buildings, and then shaved off at least three to four of the top inches of grass and topsoil on the entire piece of property. We're talking about acres and acres of shaved ground! I was practically drooling.
At first the guy agreed right away, which was a thrill to say the least, then his brother/partner started worrying about liability. So I found a waiver online, printed and signed it, faxed it to his office, and we were back in business.
Anyway, with all that said and done, I've spent much of my summer digging time there on the grounds. It's still not cake -- I have to park a few blocks away and walk to it, and the cops have harrassed me there (thank God I carried the owner's info with me), but it's been well worth it. The junk ratio is really low, so every time you get a good signal your heart leaps, because it's almost always something good!
I've really only made a handful of trips, but was able to spend a good 5-6 hours each time. Some of my finds there this summer include an antique silver ring, a 1952 silver Washington quarter, 2 Indian heads, about 15 wheaties, tons and tons of clad, a bracelet, numerous buckles, buttons, clasps and fittings, a neat old padlock, a few old pens, lots of bullets and shotgun shells, and even the base to an old lantern!
Here are some pics of my favorites among the finds so far. I plan on picking this spot clean, so hopefully I'll keep 'em coming!
