Well guys I appreciate all the info you all have provided I'm not going to decide which way it would go but as for my area there was a lot of civil war action so the possibility is there that it could be a sword hook..... Not saying that it was but just noticing that it could be... I guess I'll never know for sure, but like I was saying the house belonged to a doctor during the civil war period so that being said it still very well be a sword hook but we would have had to of been there when it broke or was dropped to know for sure.
 

The iron patch on the back is the only thing left of the flexible thin iron piece that met at the bottom of the hook. You could flex this piece in to "clip" the sword on, or whatever. I am now on the fence about these too! They are certainly not the CS style nor the federal issue sword belt rig hangers.... :icon_scratch:

Tough call I guess??? But I guess it could have been used for both.I'm almost sure those bigger ones were for horse no doubt and they all might have been.Don't take much to lead a horse around.You lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink.:laughing9:

my very first big find was a 1855 Calvary sword scabbard so I guess at least one guy had a sword!!LOL!!
