I work as warden for our rural cemetery and had this sword returned today from the sister of a boy who took it from the site 65 years ago. The sword is marked only Germany. No scabbard is present and its guard looks very much like a M 1852 but the grip looks like some export swords I have seen on line. There is no brass on the sword being all steel. Can anyone help identify what this is and where it might have come from?

Let’s back up here a minute, what is a “warden “ in a cemetery ?? Why was there a sword lying around in a cemetery in the first place ? And why did the woman return it ?

I thought it might be Argentinian or Uruguay Saber but I was unable to find an exact match. Thank you

OK so, the cemetery was founded in 1854. when I was a boy I heard rumor of this sword. three boys found it in the cemetery when it was overgrown and abandoned. subsequently the Cemetery has become the pride and joy of our city. I am the head of volunteer maintenance and warden of the now city park. we present tours during the year and the park is run entirely by volunteers and the money we earn supports the park. last week a woman, sister of the adolescent finder, called the city wishing to return it. I received the sword today and if the sword was left on a grave for a memorial or was taken there sometime in the past by a child and abandoned I do not know but I am attempting identify the sword in the process of finding out the true story

Interesting. I gotta ask though, The sister couldn’t tell you more about the circumstances of it being found?

Her brother took it from the cemetery over 65 years ago..doubt they're
going to recall many details.

I'm glad to hear it was returned. Hopefully you can discover to which grave it belongs and it's significance.
