Detector(s) used
Ace 250
Hey guys. Quick question if I may... Is it possible to break down my little ACE250, pack it into my suitcase and take the kids to Cayo Coco Cuba? Anyone done this? Or will Cuban customs think I'm trying to smuggle military hardware and confiscate?

Thoughts?

Thanks for your feedback!

Give the govt a call by phone. Cheaper than replacing the unit if permanently confiscated. TTC

Customs will confiscate it if they find it. BUT BE CAREFUL, if they question you about bringing items into the country illegally and you answer "no" BEFORE they find it...well, then your butt can really be in a crack and then smuggling type charges can be drummed up and it could get a lot worse for you than just losing a detector. And ignorance will not be accepted as an excuse. At least that's how it was about 10 years ago when a co-worker got into some trouble trying to do the same thing. Maybe things have changed in the past decade, but I doubt it. Cuba is not a country known for making changes...

Beware, be careful, evil, confiscation, prison, ignorance, friends of friends who knew some someone who never returned….::)

I've traveled enough internationally in my career to be overly careful and sometimes skeptical, but I usually wasn't traveling to tourist spots. To each his own.

Metal Detecting is against the law in Cuba, don't do it.

leave the Md home, (but returning w/ cigars?), be careful with that too.

even if you we cool to bring your 250...hell no.To test my theory...go to the worst park in the lowest income area you can think of here.Watch what happens when the junkies think they can make money with your,"gold finder"

right at the moment you realise being there sucks....thats what md'ing in third world is like.

Must suck to live your life in fear! Sad!

Cuba is the only island I know for sure you can't take it to.

I'm guessing that you are guessing about me.Fear not.Having worked in disaster relief all over the world as a coatings engineer,I can tell you that what I'm saying is true.Perhaps thats why we often had to have private armed security and I have seen people hurt for far less than a detector.up close my friend.
cheers

bigfoot1, no worries about "fella". The self-proclaimed "bum" probably hasn't left his mom's basement long enough to experience the real world. Just likes making derogatory comments then moving on.

In that cay there are possibilities to find pirates caches. The problem is that cay is into Cuban jurisdiction.I wouldn't trust in Cuban Government. Those guys have paranoia with everybody and everything that come from US; they think American come to spy them. So, be careful. Use your basic instinct of security. Remember, metal detecting is a hobby, so, don't put your life in risk just for an adventure.

Not only are you not afraid...your pretty damn brave doing the jobs you've done.

Not worth losing your detector, or getting in to trouble !

I don't know anything about the legality of it but if you've ever seen the show "locked up abroad" you wouldn't even think about it.

Go for it!
I brought many of the best metal detectors into Mexico when it was not possible.
It was the best time of my life!
Yes - you may have it taken from you - but I never did!
I enjoyed it - found my treasure - and when I was ready to return home - I sold it for double its worth!

Thanks a lot guys for the replies. A lot of varied responses, but one underlieing theme. Don't do it. Well that sucks! lol

Ya, I was just planning on goofing around out in front of the hotel. Not like I'm on a Cuban public beach or anything, not like I was sneaking out in a dingy in the middle of the night to pillage a site, so safety wasn't a concern for me.

But I was hoping being a nice Canadian tourist (Cuba and Canada get along great since the Trudeau era, they love us here. Just not our friends (you Imperialist Americans who won't lift an ancient trade embargo that servers no real purpose anymore) LOL. That's a story for another time.

Now all this means squat to a Cuban customs official who is probably hip deep in their black market. So I guess my wee little yellow buddy stays home. Why amm I going to like the only Carribean Is. that I can't take my MD too??? DOH!
