WOW. It's been over 2 YEARS for me since I found silver this big...

Weird day too, I got turned down to hunt a private company ball diamond, so headed off to the woods to putz around.

First couple hits good hits were WW2 uniform ribbon bars, love those (this whole area I hunt is old airbase, now mostly open woods), so I started spiraling out from there, more and more of the uniform bits...and then bang...a solid 91 ID.

NORMALLY, I'd just dig in cause stuff that hits that high will be large junk, but the sand was soft enough to dig with fingers and just a few inches down I felt the coin. But when I saw BARBER and not Walker....wow, just speechless... 2 years since I've dug any silver half, but a barber? NICE! :headbang:

But why a barber on the WW2 airbase? I dunno, I've dug several barber dimes and even an IH there, lots of buffaloes too. So is it from older usage before the airbase, or did they US army pay the guys with old money? The artifacts say it's all WW-2 era, I haven't found artifacts clearly older than 1941....so I dunno.

Anyways, check out the vid, nice footage of me tripping over my tongue...

Those are "stripper clips" for ammo, not uniform ribbon holders. Just saying...
Oh, nice barber. Congrats!

jim nice barber! and its not so strange that it would be there.check your pockets and i bet you can find 30year old money in them. willy

Great coin. Don't you just love that big old silver!!!

Excellent finds :)

Ammo clips and collar chevrons. Airman first or PCF in USMC. There maybe(no maybe's there is) someone else that is better with insignias than I am. Excellent finds. HHHH

NICE!! that sand must be alot better to dig in than this TN hard pack sometimes lol

How many times have you found a 1960's dime, quarter or penny in your change?? And thats 50 years ago. So it would not have been uncommon for them to have had a barber half in the 1940's, it would habe only been 30 years old at that time.

Hey Jim, nice to see you digging some good stuff with that G2. I loved seeing that big old silver half coming out of the ground, very nice. HH

Great find there...Barber coins circulated until the late 40's - mid 50's. It wasn't rare to find an Indian Head around 1950. Even though the last 90% silver was made in '64, clad coins didn't hit circulation well into 1965. I started collecting in '64 and remember getting worn Standers in change with mom at the grocery store. So A Barber in the 40's isn't that strange. Burl

Dang! You beat me to the explanation. That's exactly what I was going to say. I just reached in my pocket of change and pulled out at least one 1964 nickel, heck that's almost 50 years old, so go figure......NGE

If your not sick of hearing it yet, Nice find.

Could have been dropped by the base people. If you look in your pocket you can find 40+ year old coins.
