Looks like a bayonet from the general shape, but hard to tell size in the pic. It should have attachment ring or tube, but so deteriorated it is hard to say.

Need to see a shot from the top down. As TNGuns says: the attachment makes it a bayonet vs. a lightning rod or broken off and bent tine of a potato fork (I've found several if those)

Too long after the curved part. That part should be short for better striking ability and less chance of breaking off. Just my take on it.

What's your guess then Talon? I went to white oak civil war museum today, D.P. told me there was guys having bayonets forged for them by local blacksmith and then rigged to their personal rifle. Most likely small militia outfit ... Any one heard of this? Any it does have hole and notch on top

The Civil War lasted five years, but folks been forging pointy things in the U.S. for 400. Statistically you have a hard time supporting an extrodinary claim.




Bayonets of that period (and most still) attach to the barrel, not the stock. That little peg hole wouldn't hold up to the forces a bayonet needs to have applied, especially with that much offset leverage in the curve. I'd believe it was a corn shucking spike to be set in a stump or log before a bayonet.

You dig this in a camp area with other cw relics? D.P. really know his stuff - everything he has IDed for me or given me advice on is been dead on.. Thats all DP is been doing his whole life is civil war.... Kewl!
