Hi all, What do you think? I went to my bank the other day and the teller was very friendly. I asked if she can order boxes of halves and she said yes but.... if you are searching them you should know I have 4 customers in this branch alone searching and one of them is a coin dealer. They are sent back , get rerolled and reordered so finding anything Is a slim chance. She also said this has been going on for 15 yrs or more.

So my question.... Is she just trying to discourage me or may I just be in a bad area for this? I have managed to get 3 rolls and nothing. One roll was 2004 D&P's in very nice condition but nada. I know 3 rolls is nothing. I also know that other coins do get introduced into this pool. What are your thoughts?

You can always try. Worst thing to happen is that you get skunked.

I second that, try it and worst case, you cook up some skunk for dinner.

There is only one way to find out. Place an order and roll the dice.

What she's saying is true to a point. At one of the banks I order at, there probably are 4 others who order halves. However, unless they are complete idiots, they aren't bringing the coins back to the same bank, so the supply shouldn't be getting tainted. Also, you have to ask yourself, if these people have been doing it for fifteen years and still haven't stopped, they must be finding something! If you start up, their finds may be diminished, but that doesn't mean you won't find anything.

Only way to find out is to try...

Thanks. She also told me the coin dealer brings them back and another guy slices the side, looks at the edges, tapes them up and returns hours later! Could be part of the reason! I think I'll give it a try anyhow.

Unfortunately, she is probably telling the truth (except her prediction that you won't find anything). A bank manager the other day said he knew I was looking for silver halves in boxes but had no problem ordering boxes for me. He didn't tell me how many others order from the same branch, but it was clear that he was clued in to the hobby. The same branch hardly ever has any loose halves or rolled halves on hand, so it appears no one is dumping there (and I don't).

I also can't believe that two of the other searchers bring back their searched coins. They are not only increasing the chances of searching their own dumps, but they also are increasing the risk that the branch gets fed up with constantly giving and taking thousands of halves without making any money off it.

Tellers know everything and never lie to CRHers.

Order 20 boxes

Ok... You all have convinced me!!! Just ordered my first 2 boxes!!! :occasion14:

Try it. If it's a skunk streak, bring in silver painted halves 6,000 of them at a time for her to give to the coin dealer.

Lol... what I need is a silver rubber stamp pad to roll the coins on before giving them to that dealer or the guy just looking at edges!!! Ha ha....
Or order $25000. and sit on it a bit, then order another large sum before returning the first!

Who knows... we'll see how it goes :-)
