Relic Hunting
Hi from Tennessee. I made a solo trip last Monday and dug the pulled .58 and the 2 pieces of campfire lead (melted bullets). Not very exciting but for the fact that the campfire lead and the pulled bullet came from a new location away from the known camp center. More to come in the Fall
We were expecting t-storms this am and I hunted about 2 hours at another U.S. camp before the storms hit. I managed an old pocket knife, .54 cal. ball, an iron piece from a bit, stirrup, or iron spur, and a hard to find .75 cal ball. This is the only site where we dig these. They were used in a British Musketoon (smoothbore) and are found only in early CW sites. I think this one is the 4th I have dug.
Getting that F75 tuned up for Fall hunting with Dman, TENN JOSH, Tenn. Digger, John Freeman, and a few other friends. Read my article in the current issue of American
Digger Magazine about getting the most of your F75. The next issue contains my article about when Dman (Doug) and I hunted with Josh and Doug recovered the rare 1837 Republic of Texas button that was a Best Find of 2012 in W & E Treasures. Speaking of W & E Treasures, they tell me I have an article in their upcoming Oct. issue concerning the very U.S. CW camp where I hunted today.
I hope everyone has a safe and productive Fall hunting experience, Quindy.

Thanks Tennessee Gal. I can't tell if it was bone, wood, or whatever as a handle as all that's left is the brass on both sides. Bullets have come from that exact area so I'm not sure if it's period or not. Dating pocket knives is an inexact science so I amn told by the experts. HH, Q.

I think Shane dug his first one of those big caliber musketballs in a site this past fall. Same spot he dug the capped bust half dime. Great stuff, Quindy. Nice to find one of those in dropped condition!

Quindy
I figured you guys were getting fired up. A .75 ball with the F-75. Now that is something. I have not ever found one. I did enjoy the article on the F-75 and it was a great help to me. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.

TnMtns

I say I have not found one. I need to go back and look now and see.

Quindy..... Good to see you still "have it"! Way too hot to hunt for me unless it's a local construction site for a little while. Looks like you did O.K. and the large .75 is very hard to find. I do look forward to the fall so we can get out and go again, I miss those days. I wish Doug could hunt with us this year but I understand that he is running a kennel now and has to stay home with HIS pets. We will get him to meet us after a hunt and he can see what we found....oh, and maybe he can bring his dogs. Good finds Q, as always.

Q-Meister,
Well done on the CW relics you super snooper you. :occasion14: I don't have an F-75 (yet) but I did enjoy your article. You have the knack for turning out some great articles. I didn't see my name listed on your Fall lineup above. :dontknow: I hope you aren't afraid of the Mighty Tesoro. :laughing7:
Congrats Dude!
-Jack Wagon-

nice finds congrats HH

Good to see you scratching the digging itch Quindy. I managed to get out Saturday for the first time since my surgery. I managed to find 3 dropped .69 cal Brown Bess balls and a smaller dropped roundball, several pieces of broken spoons, and a flat button at a French & Indian War site. Not much, but French & Indian War relics are getting hard to come by these days and it was nice to get our for a few hours.

Hey Q, Way to go on a good hunt! I'm with you on ready for Fall with NO snakes, ticks, and mosquitoes, and more importantly, NO heat & humidity! :) Breezie

Nice finds, Quindy. Hope to see more from ya soon!

Thanks BB. The 4 Musketoon balls that I have dug all had dark brown patinas withe exception of one. The British import ammo is dug more often in CSA camps. It was a blunderbuss type weapon that never used buck 'n balls. The Columbia wicking shirt made the hunts more comfortable-Thanks for the tip my friend, Q.

Tnmountains (Richard) , you better check your large bullet collection as it's very possible that the Confederates still used that obsolete 1820s weapon where you hunt Bud. Thanks & HH, Q.

Donnie (Tenn. Digger), I am looking forward to out hunts together this Fall & Winter. Doug called me from Vegas to talk relic hunting today. I told him what you said about sorry he had to dog sit and we would tell him what we found-LOL. He groaned a lot. HH, Q.

MM, you better mark your calendar for late Oct. AND buy a F75 as the Trio and tenn. digger won't listen to any Jack Wagon whining if you are not finding anything-LOL. HH, Q.

Thanks Wildman and hh to you this Fall in WV. Q.

Casper, I hope you find a nice GW button this Fall. HH, Q.

Steve my friend, you are progressing nicely if you were able to get out and dig. Don't overdo it. Looking frorward to great posts from you and maybe a Banner or two this Fall & Winter Bud, Q.

Breezie, I'm with you Southern Lady!! Where I hunted today, the owner had recently killed a bunch of snakes. He carries a "Judge" with him when he bush hogs-LOL. Bad sign huh? HH , Q.

Matt, keep that F75 coil to the soil and you will dig plates this year. You are in a great place to hunt Bud and you have already proven you know how to use the F75. HH, Q.

Good stuff!

Thanks Richard. It's not the Shenandoah Valley but we are fortunate to have a few camps to hunt and nice landowners to work with. HH and I'm predicting another major CSA relic for you to dig this Fall. Remember what you found the last timre I made that prediction? Q.

:notworthy: You always know where to find the good stuff Q! :icon_thumleft: WTG on the finds! Can hardly wait till winter. I'm so ready!

I am teaching those dogs to dig relics. We will be well protected. One dog weighs 100 lbs. while the other two weigh about 65 lbs. I had a wonderful dog named Timex. He was a watch dog.

Yes, of course I remember - a Confederate Block A button! Please, tell me it's going to be a CSA plate this time!!!:hello2:
