In Britain many had a conversion done so that instead of using just one PP3 9 volt battery you could use a pack of AA's situated in a box under the armrest which had the two advantages of providing a much longer running time before you hit the performance drop off level and provided a little counter-balance weight for the coil at the front of the detector.

In theory with all modern detectors voltage regulation should help minimise performance drop off but some are better regulated than others. In general the more meter or tone dependant the detector is the worse the performance drop when the batteries are becoming exhausted.

Some of the really older (25 years plus) detectors in fact work better when the edge has been taken off a new pack of batteries and some manufacturers suggested you use new batteries in a radio for a few hours before fitting to your detector.

With your Tesoro there's no worry as long as you use the battery test every so often. The loud audio blast that many don't like is designed that way as a battery needs to be under load. The nice little meters that some detectors have that need to be switched on for a check don't give a true idea of the state of the cells. I've noticed that most detectors do work better with quality batteries like Energisers rather than some no label brand bought off a market stall. Both may indicate as being full voltage but lots of the cheapies can't provide the load to the detector when its needed.

Thanks. I'm thinking of getting rechargeables so I can always recharge them before each outing, and have them full.

After today, I'm almost certain that battery charge makes a huge difference. Changed my batteries today, went to a park that I searched when batteries were lower. Previously, I didn't find any old coins, but now they were popping up everywhere! Same coil.

Yeah the batteries are very important and the power level that they hold. I do not use a set of batteries more than once ! And if I am using rechargeable batteries I will change them out in just a few hours of hunting . Now that is overkill sometimes but having good power makes the detector work much better .
