Dont know about buttons but thats cool :icon_thumright:

Re: Texas Button found

Looks old to me. What state is the farm in?

Re: Texas Button found

Looks post Civil War to me but post up a better pic of the back and we will be able to tell it's age. HH

Re: Texas Button found

Dude,

Republic of Texas button I think.

Re: Texas Button found

I'm not an expert but I'm pretty darn sure that's a confederate Texas state button. Those are rare and can go for thousands. I'm voting banner on this one. Here is a link to a similiar button in better shape selling for six grand.

Re: Texas Button found

I think you have a quality button there. To me it looks like a period Texas. But like MKnTenn said we need to see better pictures. If you get some that are better I would hope to see that button up top.
Great Find.

Re: Texas Button found

I can't find any Texas button with that back mark. Not to say it isn't CW period. Show us a better close up of the front and back. It could be a good button. I hope so as they are highly desirable.

What I can find out about this button is that it was possibly made about 1860 by Steele and Johnson. I can find no reference to their making a Texas button. You may have a rare button but someone with more experience than me should make this call. I think it is genuine and I would search the area that you found it very closely. Could be more relics there that would help id this button. Let us know!

Thanks, for the replies, the front certainly looks like the Steele and Johnson but the back mark and shank look differant.

Thanks, it is a lot like yours. oh well i will just have to keep digging.

Congratulations! I don't care if it is post 1866 or not, that would be a thrill of a find for this Texian. I still would go back and hunt that area thoroughly.

[Did you know the Texas State Capitol in Austin rises higher than the Capitol building in Wash. D.C.; and the San Jacinto Monument rises higher than the Wash. Monument? ] Just sayin'..

Superior Qaulity was a common backmark in the civil war error used by many company's inluding steele and johnson. I think we are making the mistake of discounting this button because its uncommon. Id try to get ahold of someone like bobby mckinney that really knows there texas stuff.
Here is a whole bunch of cw superior qaulity backmarks with many atributed to steele and johnson
