I got out to a few different sites over the long weekend. Friday a buddy and I went in search of a French & Indian War fort that some say was wiped out by strip mines. After hours of walking with only a few dropped musket balls and a hand full of rifle cartridges, he agreed to take me to a new permission that he has hit twice and found a number of coppers, buttons, and a linked pair of octagonal silver cufflinks - provided I give him everything I find. Oh well, that's still better than shotgun shells and rifle casings! He hadn't found any Spanish silver there yet, so I took care of that....1773 Half Real

I also dug some buttons, a strap tippet, and a nice Tallio cufflink

Saturday I got out for a few hours to a French & Indian War site that we have hit hard over the years. All the larger signals have been harvested, leaving only smaller items and low conductor tombac buttons. I did get a few buttons and a linked pair of octagonal cufflinks.

I also brought home some of these large head wagon wheel spikes. These turn up at all the encampment sites along this military road from 1758. I'll try and preserve these specimens.

Finally, I spent some time Sunday fighting corn stubble at a mid to late 19th century site that I have pounded hard over the years. This summer is the first year they have ever planted these fields. They planted no-till corn there and I was hoping they cut the corn and plowed the stubble, but no such luck. I did get a two piece B & O button and a little crosshatch pattern button.

I was thinking the same thing, what if I find a Draped Bust half dime or other early US silver :laughing7:
That one might have to go in the secret "I didn't find anything else" pocket. :tongue3:

Nah Bill, I gave it to the guy who took me to the site. He wants to keep an intact collection from this little house site. We did however discuss the inscription you added to my copy of your book after I found the Spanish LOL

Yep - you da man Steve - colonial silver coin extractor extraordinaire!! :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:

That B&O button is sick! I got a couple LIRR (Long Island Rail Road) buttons but that B&O is sweet man!
Thanks, the B & O would have been nicer had the gilt held up. I like digging old Rail Road buttons, I jus don't find enough of them :dontknow:

Great finds!! Every single time I hunt a 'turn all finds over' site, I'm crossing my fingers that bucket listers remain bucket listers. I can't help it! Nice gesture to give up a little Real. Maybe buy a similar one off fee-bay and use it as a place-holder in your collection? Cheers!

Awesome relic hunt topped with a Spanish silver, congratulations! :occasion14:

Killer Spanish Steve. Hopefully we’ll get a mild start to winter in our region and get some extra time to dig.

Thanks, even if you have to turn finds over sometimes, at least you got the thrill of digging them and the pictures to prove it. No need to go buy a half real to replace it, I already have a pretty nice collection of them.

Thanks Professor, it was nice to get out four days in a row over the holiday.

Thanks Steve. We might need to throw in a couple deep freezes if that will kill off some ticks, and a couple heavy snows to mat down the brush. Otherwise I'm all for a mild winter

Nice going on the finds Steve, the silver is a nice recovery. I don't recall ever seen or have dug a wagon wheel spike before, different for sure. The R/R button is a sweet keeper also, just don't dig enough cool buttons as that.

Nice digs Steve. Pretty reale and a nice historic cuff link. Looks like a great day to me.

Thanks Pepper. The large head wagon wheel spikes are kind of near and dear to my heart because when I was six years old we lived beside and on part of a 1758 French & Indian War fort. Well the Fort Foundation bought up three of four of the properties next to us and started excavating the yards. I remember them finding a lot of these spikes. My dad made a little sifter for my brother and I to dig in our yard and we found one of these spikes.
Fast forward 30 years when I started detecting encampments to the east leading to this fort I found a lot of the same large head spikes. I saved some but they are usually in pretty bad shape. I might have a chance at preserving these four in decent condition.
