Beginning around 1:30 am local time on 20th June, millions of Brazilians received a shrill warning tone on their mobile phones, sometimes with an accompanying official-looking message that read (translated) as: “Protect yourselves: ALIEN ATTACK, PEOPLE, WE HAVE ARRIVED!”
Various messages, some hopelessly ungrammatical and incoherent, were subsequently delivered through Brazil's official government alert system used for things such as extreme weather, flood, and civil defence warnings.
The hoax was met with a range of emotions from hilarity through to panic. It’s not yet determined who sent the messages, but Brazilian Federal Police are investigating… more from the perspective of concerns about a supposedly secure system being hacked.
