The origins of the song are a mystery. "The House of the Rising Sun." It is a traditional American folk song with no known original author, dating back to the early 20th century or earlier. Great song, I now sing it at Karaoke. The lyrics tell the tragic tale of a person's life gone wrong in New Orleans, often interpreted as a warning about a notorious brothel, gambling den, or prison. I could never really tell which, but I still love the song.
I nearly died fighting a house fire in which I almost succumbed to smoke inhalation. My lung capacity went down to 33 percent. In my rehabilitation, I had to learn to breathe again. That song was slow enough to allow me to breathe in between the words. Hell, it was the first song I sang every day, as much lung healed. No, my lung capacity is back up to 77%. I walk six miles a day, singing that song as I walk. It gets me funny looks, but hey, perhaps I am in that stage of life where I no longer give a shit. I never before ever sang a song in my life or even remembered an entire song. Yet here I am on the back end of life and now singing other songs. So yeah, that song resonates with me, and yes, all its vices.
