"THE ARGUS GOLD MINE" OR WILLIAMSTOWN [WELCH MINERS]
Hi all today i went to a new site and nice pleasent afternoon after a few days of high temperatures . and bush -fires.The area is called Eaglehawk and there numerous old mine sites here and i mit even get lucky with a bit of gold. The area is better known for relics and large areas have never been hunted. This due to the heavy undergrowth and over the years quite a few people have got lost for a few days.Everything looks the same and it is to lose direction.
The Argus mine was first started by J.P williams who had a gold claim on the site in 1853.He worked the claim until he dug down to the Quartz saddle reef .This reef was called the Argus Reef.By 1875 the mine employed about 50 miners and a small mining settlement developed. After the mine closed in 1903 most of the wooden miners cottages where transported to other locations. The mine was never a rich mine but supported the families of Williamstown for about 50 years.Half the area around the site is Private and i donot have access.Still plenty to hunt.
Today i found a small silver ring {band}, brass clock key, seemless pill bottle and a ink well, brass buckle plate,English penny very green [1887] and a button with some type of floral design [welch i think] heres a few pics of my finds and thanks for reading
