I don’t doubt they saw wild big cars. Conservation officials are always reluctant to admit that animals exist where they aren’t officially supposed to. I recall several times seeing mountain lions here in Missouri, though the officials said they were not here and I was mistaken. Fast forward a few decades and there have been so many sightings that they’ve had to admit it. Though now they just say they’re visiting or migrating and don’t actually live here. Uh huh.
