Standing in Wells Fargo talking to teller who confesses he and his manager are collectors.....

Him: "So you are a collector. Do you want to order some coin?"

Me: "I don't think so. Dimes are OK, but halves from Wells Fargo don't seem to yield anything"

Him: "Yeah, that's because they shine a spectrograph light on all the halves and cull out the silver. They very seldom miss one."

Might be just a wild rumor, but the results from bag after bag (they come that way from the carrier) do not lie.

I have zeroed in on 2 banks in my area that yield worthwhile silver.
That's where my efforts will be concentrated.

Mmmph... I don't know about all that. Sounds like the Mgr. is trying to discourage you from ordering.
I think every bank has dried up recently as far as boxes. A spectrograph? Really? That's not realistic.
Just how much would one cost and your telling me in this economy that someone shelled out big bucks to pluck out a few pieces of Ag that show up now and then? Nah-unlikely. Just how long would it take to get the ROI? Sounds like horse hockey to me. Me thinks he is buying boxes, too and is trying to discourage you.
More than likely, you have someone (or lots of someones) dumping huge amounts of halfs at that bank and they just keep recycling the same trash over and over.

You may be very right.

But bear with me a bit.
If the entire Wells Fargo establishment in my part of the country were to decide to cull silver, how much could they get with armored car after car bringing in swag?

I don't think any ordinary pickup truck would be able to drive away with one week's take.

And I know whereof I speak.

I am not talking about one town or a part of a town. I am talking about the banks I have vacuumed for 300 miles of I-5 in Western Oregon. If I may say so, I have done a pretty good job of sampling Wells Fargo's coin in this area.

I roll at least $10,000 a week in the towns I visit.
I don't think you could buy a tank of gas with all the silver halves in all of Wells Fargo out here.

Nah. If anything, they are just recycling more coin and rerolling it themselves. If Ag takes a nosedive, they are gonna be stuck with a real expensive machine. How will they explain that to stockholders? In this economy, If I owned stock in a bank that was not 100% focusing on banking and taking care of customers, I would dump it!

Coin Collecting is for kids, silly rabbit, not banks.

I have had a string of tellers blatently tell they take silver, "we get first dibs" AND 2 oddly enough say the same thing with silver in the tray, "that's for me, Im buying it." Can you blame them? They'd be a fool not too.

Now how to change with that game? Im perplexed.

FYI, I have had multiple teller/tray scores so lets not get all paranoid that all them are culling...

If you can't get what's in the tray, get it where they got it from:
Buy bags from the coin counter, or order it.
If they won't let you play, go where they will.

While you may bring up a valid point, how do you really know what your bank is doingg behind closed doors. Also a spectrograph is a drop in the bucket for a bank.a
