A Friends meeting house is a place of worship for the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). George Fox, founder of the Society, spoke contemptuously of churches as "steeple houses" and Friends were convinced that there was no necessity for special buildings for worship.

A meeting house will usually consist of: a large meeting room, smaller rooms for committees, children's classes, etc., a kitchen and toilets.

These places should be Productive.
they have been around before churches
in some cases & were also used for
other types of Public activities.

I have hunted the one in Deep run and found nothing to really talk about. I was only there once so far. The one in Quakertown is in the middle of town with a lot of on lookers. I have thought of it. Lahaska and Solebury are tough. Lots of "rich" people around those parts with bad attitudes. Great places though.

I wrote a nice note to seek permission to hunt the one in Chester which dates to the 1600's. I got no reply.

That means they don't care. Go for it! I have never asked permission to hunt at any church and I have never had a problem. Mostly people left me alone or came over and asked me what I have found. I have often thought of keeping a dirty indian head cent in my pocket and giving it to someone that worked there if they looked at me weird. You can get them for a buck at the coin shop and it would be worth it to keep hunting with no more fuss.

I have so many meeting houses around me. I never really knew how to approach them about detecting there... Guess I kinda feel like I am dealing with a church. I have contacted many churches in my area and have not had a green light on any of them.

I would try and ask the Closest Neighbor

IF They don't say "No, Go for it"
Ask if they know Who to ask.

Don't try and detect around the Friends Meeting House in Catawissa. The borough has banned metal detecting in the borough. There was a front page article in the Bloomsburg paper about 6 months ago about detectorists getting chased from the cemetary adjacent to the meeting house. Apparently when they were told to leave they got mouthy with the borough councilman and then the police got involved. The town decided to draw up an ordinance against detecting. The police stated that they have chased people detecting in the cemetary and around the Friends Meeting House on several occasions. People have to remember that property is owned by someone, you just don't go in and start detecting. Especially if it is a cemetary or historic site. You have to get permission. Also, when you are told to leave, don't start trouble. Just say you are sorry and pack up and leave.

I was keeping this one Back.

I thought this was the one I searched up there in '05
but there was no Cemetery so I checked my Records

The one I was at was down alot Fruther.
looked like this though, and nobody had a problem
with us doing the woods

If it is privately owned, you don't mess with it. Even if it is public and someone that works there gives you a problem, you just leave. I agree. I have never had a problem detecting anywhere in my 9 years with the hobby. Then again, I have a friendly face. ;D

Cjon455 and I just came back from the one in Catawissa today. Beautiful place, but unfortunately, md'ing is absolutely prohibited.

The Roaring Creek Meetinghouse, Numidia, Columbia County,
was built in 1795. The building is
one of only two extant log meetinghouses
built under the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting.

The other is the Catawissa Friends Meetinghouse, erected in 1789, also located in Columbia County.
