Relic Hunting
Hello Everyone,

The series of photos depict hunting playgrounds from June 26th – Today: August 28th. During this time I tried a fun experiment. The goal was to hunt only 6 very well used playground areas in affluent communities (some of these playgrounds have 15 rides and over 50 people at peak times) where the kid’s rides are located and had only fine mulch or coarse wood chips as their base. I wanted to see how many things I could find without digging in the grassy areas, but rather hunts based solely on recent or very fresh drops (a few were found a bit deeper). I visited each playground on Monday morning (start time 4:45 am) after the full weekend of children playing and teenagers hanging out. I took about five hours to complete the detecting and travelling per week. The rest of the metal detecting week was dedicated to old coin shooting, relic hunting and researching new places.

In the photos, only jewelry is shown, but rest assured the clad count was extremely high; about $83.00 dollars. During this time I found eight dollar coins around this one ride; a 6 seated spinning horizontal wheel. The trash decreased exponentially as the weeks moved on, since each visit I would remove more and more. By the last few weeks only good targets were found.

The jewelry was mixed with about 95% Bling and 5% Gold and Silver; I’m pleased with the experiment outcome.

Alas, as school opens my experiment has come to an end…cannot wait for next year.

Thank you for viewing.

Hello DeepseekerADS,

I believe Pilgrim station is slated for shutdown, I enjoyed being in it at various times over the years. :icon_thumright:

I know the general area you were hunting, productive at times. :occasion14:

Love it. That was an awesome idea. Keep us posted. Would love to see if there is a spike during Christmas break.

Hey Doc, I'm really surprised it's still on-line!

I was there twice, the first in '87 and got a better offer at Diablo Canyon in Kali. Went back to Metro Cleveland for a job offer and they balked at my salary, so I went back to Pilgrim in '88. Stayed there 6 weeks that time, and Cleveland Electric came in with the money, so I went back and stayed there 6 years before traveling again.

My memory is pretty blurred now, but I remember pushing my finger through a pipe in the Off Gas System, the corrosion was so rampant. Let's just say Boston Edison spent a whole lot of money getting that monstrosity back on-line - and still kept it going.

Hopefully they'll shut it down for good, I don't work there now - so I sure wouldn't want to live close to it!

That plant was the worst nuke I worked at, but the money was good. My wife wanted to settle down though..... I settled for less and still lost her! If she hadn't spent so danged much money I wouldn't have had to work 100 hours a week, and she met another fellow while I was trying to pay her bills :dontknow:

Pilgrim is supposed to be off line, they are shutting it down. Not sure who owns it now, nationalgrid maybe? They said they can't afford to bring it up to the new codes.

I have often wondered why someone would build a nuclear power plant so close to open ocean. So many natural disasters could wipe that out. We would all glow in the dark for a long time!

If I recall correctly, Pilgrim was first built in the 60's - very old technology. I know that while I was there, they found that the monitors for the Rad Waste stack had never been hooked up.

It's a wonder those lobsters so enjoyed there by all didn't glow in the dark.....

Nice band of booty here Professor. I used to love hitting the tot lots at night but, most of the parks are posted no one allowed after sundown. They do produce some very interesting finds for sure. Cool experiment and respectable clad count too.:headbang:

Thanks Kurios1. :occasion14: I am planning another experiment next year involving researched out-of-town private buildings. :icon_thumleft:
