The good news is that my brother and I were hunting at an old ghosttown. We got good news that we could metal detect the private property that the ghosttown was on. It was good news that the field was in soybeans that contained the ghost town. The day was good and the weather was very good. After hunting a while and finding a few good targets targets my lucky brother called out..... HEY brother I got a good signal. Come over and see if you get the same good signal. I got the same good signal as he did. My brother had already dug down at least a good foot. He asked me to help him dig down until we found what ever the target was. After digging another foot and a half we finally found what was giving the good signal. We dug at least down 2 1/2 feet. Looking down and removing the thin layer of dirt that remained on this target we could see a handle that might be attached to a cast iron lid. By now both of us were good and tired by all the dirt we had to remove to get down to the target. We both decided that it would be good to dig until we could identify what we were looking at. When we saw the lid we both immediately thought and said the same thing. Could this be a pot full of treasure? We dug some more dirt and saw that it was a pot. The lid and pot were left there in that old ghosttown for a reason. We knew that the pot has been intentionally buried the way it was sitting. We again dug more dirt until we could finally could get the lid off.
My brother put his shovel under the lid a bit and pryed the lid up and off the pot. We both were silent as the lid came up because we we both hoping that was some good treasure in the pot. Yippee I thought to myself. My brother has always been lucky when we go metal detecting. Even where he has lacked skill metal detecting his luck has always seemed to pull him through. Damn we are rich I thought! @#!%^$ Lucky brother!

Well it turned out that the pot contained water that had seeped into the pot over the 157 years that it was hidden. We removed the lid/pot, a horse shoe and another lid that was under the pot from the hole.

If you read this far you may think that the bad new was that we didn't find treasure in the pot. But I would say the only bad news was that I had to carry the cast iron lid/pot at least a half mile to the truck. It was heavy.

The horseshoe will surely bring us good luck next time. Also the good memory will last through my lifetime. The hunt with my brother was good. Perhaps the real treasure was found. :) DSCN2710.webpDSCN2711.webp

Happy hunting.

Wow......that makes ya wonder why it was buried. I did read about putting a dutch oven in a pit of coals and covering it for a stew recipe once. Wonder if that is how it got so deep.:dontknow:

did you recheck the hole after you pulled it out?

We rechecked the hole and found the second lid, a small piece of chain and the horseshoe. Maybe next time we find the jackpot. Cheers

That is a cool pot and horse shoe. Congrats. Sorry you had to carry it a long way.

That is really cool. An amazing piece of history. To imagine if it sat there maybe just a few more years, it would of been gone forever.

Actually, a wonderful piece of history and memory that will last a lifetime! Congrats
