The Hill - Day 2 - Hammered - VERY RARE CELTIC SILVER...

After our last 4 hammered outing we would have been happy with just 1, but expecting none....
It was a little showery & sticky but overall pretty good going.
We gridded for only 5 hours today as we got what we needed.

Scottish Hammered of Alex III
Very Rare ​Cunobelinus Crescent Horse Silver Unit circa 25AD (Our first Celtic silver since 31 Dec 18, & one I need)

By the first look you could think weird Denarius.... Thats quite a find! Congrats! Thinking about this roman style Celtic silver i vote Banner.
I don't know where to look first, a bunch of great finds today. The Scottish hammered with stars is something i'd never seen before.

The horse is what they call a Romanized version & the head is somewhat as well. This tribe were thought to be trading with the Roman at the time, plus sending the sons of Kings to Roman for education, leading to more trade etc..

PS. we have had some Alexander III, but not many.

I have the old version of Van Arsdell book from 1989 (not the revised versions), & its was classified as Very Rare.
I then checked the most recent Ancient British Coins (ABC) of 2010 & its still classified as Very Rare, telling me that not many had been found since 1989 until 2010, so although 10 years later, I'm pretty sure its close to the 'Very Rare' bracket.

That is all in terms of known Recorded examples (of course there are about 10 fold not recorded), however the likelihood of finding one is a whole different ball game.

I don't know that coin but from a quick web research, it's clear that it is a very rare coin.

Up until this day we had no other signs of Celtic other than the odd La Tene brooch which cross over into the Roman.
Our ratio of Celtic Gold/Silver/Bronze is probably pretty even - 1/1.2/1.2 (from the top of my head)

I don't see you guys finding many 'holed' coins of this vintage, you obviously do, I guess I just never noticed them before.
