The monkey's off my back! 1st large cent (Draped Bust) and some old silver too

As some of you may remember, I recently posted how I had received permission from the State to hunt some state-owned land that is normally verbotten to metal detecting. Old maps I found (1906) show over 30 homes on land that is now state property. Some of the roads are still is use, some closed and some are now part of a bridal trail system. My permission expired today (they only gave me a two week window) so...with this beautiful fall weather I wanted to make the most of it..so yesterday (Saturday) my son Spencer and I joined Bob (Mirage from TNet) for an all day hunt in the woods.
We planned on trying to check out seven cellar holes in an area of about 4 square miles. The first was right off the road and easily found. Right away we started hitting wheaties and I popped a 1954 Rosie early on to get the silver train rolling. Bob also scored some nice coins there (I'll let him post his finds so as to not spoil the fun) with one of his coins dating the spot to at least the turn of the century. These homes were all abandoned/bought out/demolished around 1960 from what I learned. Some research of mine (calls to the county's archivist who looked up some even older maps on microfilm for me) seemed to indicate that NONE of the homes would be any older than around 1870. Sooo...we expected to maybe find IHs and maybe even some Seated silver. Seeing as how a silver quarter older than a SLQ was one of the top on my list of "not found yets" I was full of hope.
The next spot we looked for was four cellarholes but required a long hike. I forgot my GPS but we had good sat.photos and old topo maps so we thought we could find them. Eventually we DID find some debris...sq. nails, old door hinge...bricks, but never really even found a depression or sign of a cellarhole.
Spencer in the meantime...grew bored with swinging the Ace250 (hey...he's 13 and needs constant coins to stay focused) so he went off on an adventure using a CO2 powered 6mm airsoft pistol. Dunno how many rounds he fired, but at one time I caught a glimpse of him with the pistol held up by his head doing his best Bond impression while trying to stalk a squirrel that was high up in the huge forrest canopy (don't worry folks...at that range and with a toy gun I doubt if he could do more that make a squirrel mad even if he did get a lucky shot in)..anyways...he was thouroughly amused and it kept him busy while we hunted.
We took a break for lunch and decided to hike out and hit two other cellarholes that were on a closed down roads right near where I parked. We kinda got lost and...using the sun's position ended up pointed kinda in the right direction again...and came out of the woods maybe 400 yds from where I parked the Element.
(BTW, I didn't take any pics of Saturday's adventure but Bob did...maybe he'll post some)
At the first of the two cellarholes again we hit wheats and then a GREAT high 80's VDI on my DFX ended up being an old pocket watch (my first nearly complete one)
At the second cellarhole down the closed road I had another upper 80's target and after digging a deep plug it was still in the hole. Spencer saw the edge and pulle it out proclaiming "Barber Quarter!"...man!...I gave a whoop (one of my still-to-find-list coins) and Bob came running. Spencer handed it to him and he announced "Canadian, but an oldie...it's a Vicki!"
Ended up being a 1872 Queen Victoria quarter in great shape!

Here's my finds and junk from Sat.

We left a while after that and went home to see the Indians choke in Beantown (ouch).

Today Spencer and I went back with my dog and headed back to the spot where the Vicki was dug and started a short hunt.
Spencer tried to keep at it and dug quite a few targets looking for a decent find
DSCF1445.webp
My first decent sounding target (in the 60s) produced a square nail.
Rescanning the hole the sound was sweet (but broken) and the VDI now was in the 70s.
Another sq. nail from the hole and then...the VDI hit 80
Out popped a large corroded copper disk...my first LC. You can tell from the bust it's a Draped Bust Cent, but no date's visible at all....Still...my second oldest coin next to the 1792 Hibernia I found last year.

I also dug a bent up solid silver spoon, part of a pewter utensil and a few other doo dads.
Here's the finds from Sat and Sunday cleaned a bit

I'll attempt to get another permit...I am sure there's more there! (and there MANY cellarholes I haven't even tried yet.
Very satisfying weekend.

HH all!

Congrats on a great pile of finds and a couple of firsts.
The LC looks a bit bitter sweet and the Vickie looks just sweet!
Thats a fairly pricey Quatta for those who collect Canooks....WTG....Joe

Re: Finally the monkey's off my back! 1st LC (Draped Bust) and some old silver too

I withdraw the question about the Vickie quarter from Mirage's post, it belongs here.
1872's are all H's. You guys had a fantastic hunt! I'd say it's at least a 65-buck quarter.

Congratulations. I wish you could go back. I wan't to see more posts from that spot.

Re: Finally the monkey's off my back! 1st LC (Draped Bust) and some old silver too

Good stuff. I still forget to recheck holes every now and then. Found a coin spill today at a beach that had seven coins in it. New stuff but still fun to keep checking that hole and getting results each check!

Congrats on the Large Cent. They are nice to hold.

Re: Finally the monkey's off my back! 1st LC (Draped Bust) and some old silver too

Congratulations on finding some nice coins Dan, well done!

I enjoyed the story, and Bob's pictures too.

A little bottle of white out will renew that permit for another two weeks, heck maybe two years.

Looks like a lot of hard detecting but in the end, it really paid off for you Dan. Well done on the great finds. Congrats! Especially on the LC!!

Awesome hunt Dan! Congrats on some great coins.
What is that tag in the upper left of pix #9-11? ???
Did Spencer get the squirrel? ;)
Hopefully you can get an extended permission so you can hit it again.
Thanks for the post.
-MM-

The tag is stamped 1813 on the center and says "Lewis Electric Company" on the perimeter. It's aluminum.

No...no squirrel either ;D He had a blast regardless.

In general I was a little disappointed in the lack of silver at the 4 sites we hunted. I think a big part of it is all the growth...

Bob

Next time (assuming there will BE a next time) we go in there I'm hauling along a gas powered weed whip with nylon blades.

You think I am kidding? :D

Re: Finally the monkey's off my back! 1st LC (Draped Bust) and some old silver too

Dan.....

Congrats on the LC..No matter the condition it's a keeper.
Unfortunately..Here in Ohio..The ground isn't littered with Large Cents, And finding one is
requires alot more work and dedication. I would say you kicked the Monkey's A$$ and followed it up with a silver.. Nice Work..

Seeing as how a silver quarter old than a SLQ was one of the top on my list of "not found yets" I was full of hope.

A SLQ was the only thing on my list this year.. I'm not giving up just yet..

Great Hunt guys

Nice Draped Danimal !

Congrats !

Thanks Jeff...while far from being nice, it's my first and will always carry that special spot in memory.
Now I'll probably start finding them with more regularity. Just like when I wanted my first IH so badly. After that first one, they started popping up more often.
Nice thing about this area is that it's obvious it hasn't been hunted. THAT in itself keep the excitement high.

Yes now that your Detector has the Smell for them,
you probably will.

Those Early Large Cents & Half cents have a Special
excitement for me when I find them.
So Any Condition, Especially when there is at least
enough Detail to Photograph. Means they are Nice to me ;D

Yep...a Vicky quarter is still something that has eluded me...maybe I will have to head stateside for my first! Clear out the guest room...

Re: The monkey's off my back! 1st large cent (Draped Bust) and some old silver t

Dan, nice narration of the backround of the site and the hunt itself. I wish I coulda went with you guys, sounds like a roomy site to hunt with plenty of age, despite combating the growth. And congrats on the large cent, I know you were really itching to find one. And in my opinion the quarter is almost as good (besides the fact that the LC indicates more potentially older targets), despite heavy wear on the LC. At first glance it almost looked like the flowing hair type. Now I think I'm really due. lol

Thanks Nate...sorry you couldn't make it, but your Dad told me you guys qualified for this coming weekend. Maybe if the weather holds up we can all get back out there the weekend of Nov 3-4th.
I'm sure your Dad told you I found two more last night. I posted those two in a sep. thread.
The odds say there's more there. No way in two hours I wandered right up to the only two left. LOTS of ground left in those woods.

Re: The monkey's off my back! 1st large cent (Draped Bust) and some old silver too

Once again Congrats man.

You researched and went through alot to get those coins. That quarter is better than a large cent. That is a really rare find also.

I'd have to pitch a tent there for the next 2 weeks. Or hunt the hell out of it on a sat and sun. Hope you get more time to hunt the sites. I love old foundation hunting.
