The Old Coins Keep Coming My Way!

It’s been a great few days for me! I found a King George II farthing on Saturday, a Liberty Cap Large Cent on Monday, and today; a Shield Nickel!





The signal was a little more jumpy than I prefer, but I was convinced that I heard a nickel and dug anyways. 25 kHz on the Deus really makes nickels much easier to find! Does anyone have any cleaning advice?

That shield nickel looks great! When I dig one, they always come out of the ground totally crudded up. I wouldn't do anything to it.

Just let it dry out and see what happens. I’ve dug 2 and both were a lot worse than yours and I only got a date off of one. I’d let it be and maybe hit it lightly with a andres pencil and “nose grease”. Nice job, that’s a hard coin to get in good shape

I couldn’t help myself, I soaked it in vinegar and salt for about 25 minutes. The coin was already pitted, but it came quite clean and the date popped, it’s an 1867.





It doesn’t get much better for a shield nickel, best one that I’ve ever found!

With nickels its like this; You have your choice of colors, black, brown, red, orange, green, or a somewhat nickel looking color providing that you're willing to perform chemistry experiments. It looks really nice in hand, phone cameras pick up too many imperfections that you do not see with the naked eye. This coin looks great in hand!

I have only found one shield nickel and I absolutely ruined it by trying to clean it. Yours is priceless

I hope my first shield nickel comes out half as nice as yours! If your coin is already in relic quality, and not super rare or a key date, cleaning it won't really harm its value anyway. Speaking of which, who even plans on ever selling their awesome finds anyway? Does resale value even matter? The "actually, cleaning coins destroys their value" folks who will seriously harp on you for cleaning coins are mostly just trolls anyway.

You bring up a great point! I've got two coin collections, my dug coins and my coins that I've purchased from a coin shop. I know fully well to not clean an incredibly rare coin. In five years of detecting I've only found two coins that my coin dealer would even consider buying from me anyways. He wasn't able to offer a great price because they were dug, and besides they weren't for sale! There are times when cleaning a coin can actually make matters worse, and there are coins that just won't ever truly be able to be restored. Most of us know this however.
