:hello:

We went back to the fields that we did last week to see if I could pluck another or perhaps a couple of hammered out. There are three narrow fields all in a row going down a slope, the middle one is grass and was full of .22 cartridges ??? The other two fields are in stubble, one is very rocky due to a building being there in the past, not quite sure what type but it seemed to be dating to the late 1600's going by the finds.

The second stubble field turned out to be very quiet but it did produce the only hammered of the day, but not much else apart from the dreaded .22 bullets. Looking across the three fields it soon became clear that there must have been an old footpath across the three fields linking the two villages as the finds all lined up in that area, the to small villages which are about a mile apart, both have early Churches dating to the 1600's, and these both lined up with the area were the finds were coming from. The footpath is not visible now, infact it has been moved further down the fields on line with the more modern house of the village.

It was quite a busy day finds wise, mostly dating to the late 1600's early 1700's. Don't quite know why the lead trade weight has had nails embedded into it:icon_scratch:

This area is about done now, but I will return after it's ploughed hopefully I will have a few more interesting finds to show.

Yeap, 100% sure its 1st C AD & had inlaid enamel.
I will have to look, shows how rusty I am:laughing7: what do you think about the weird trade weight with the nails, don't know if I should remove them or not, but might damage it.:dontknow:

Like you, not sure why they did it, but as a guess it might be to cancel the weight & take it out of circ as unofficial?? Whatever, its part of its history & I would leave it, plus I agree it may ruin it.

Well worth the lots of digging! Way better than my sunday... like the decorated clay pipe and the ring. :icon_thumleft:
You see there are still loads of finds waiting for you!

I know a crown above the pattern was added to make them official, so any without the crown would be unofficial, not sure if this has a crown but the nails are in that area were it would have been, so you could be right.

Its a metal pipe, I've had only 1, no idea on date, maybe SS knows?

The pipe is pewter mate, it's a pipe bowl from a toy whistle. 17thC.

Hello Colin, That trade weight is strange, why nail it.:dontknow:
Like Cru suggested Rob, perhaps to make it unofficial, I can't see a crown visible above the fleu de lis, but the nails could obscure it.:dontknow:

Roman ring and a hammered silver, crazy how many more layers of history you have in the UK compared to the states. Excellent saves, congrats
Fortunate we are indeed my friend to have Great History, about the only great thing we do have left...sadly.:sadsmiley:
