We went back to the fields that we did last week to see if I could pluck another or perhaps a couple of hammered out. There are three narrow fields all in a row going down a slope, the middle one is grass and was full of .22 cartridges The other two fields are in stubble, one is very rocky due to a building being there in the past, not quite sure what type but it seemed to be dating to the late 1600's going by the finds.
The second stubble field turned out to be very quiet but it did produce the only hammered of the day, but not much else apart from the dreaded .22 bullets. Looking across the three fields it soon became clear that there must have been an old footpath across the three fields linking the two villages as the finds all lined up in that area, the to small villages which are about a mile apart, both have early Churches dating to the 1600's, and these both lined up with the area were the finds were coming from. The footpath is not visible now, infact it has been moved further down the fields on line with the more modern house of the village.
It was quite a busy day finds wise, mostly dating to the late 1600's early 1700's. Don't quite know why the lead trade weight has had nails embedded into it
This area is about done now, but I will return after it's ploughed hopefully I will have a few more interesting finds to show.
