The Power Of Moving Water

I took a couple of Grandsons on a 'Herkimer Diamond' hunt recently, & discovered that heavy rains had washed out a road bed & carried one tinhorn about a hundred yards downstream.
They are six foot high, & very heavy, but one washed downstream about a hundred yards, Mother Nature is 'still in charge'.
We found a few keepers, & had a nice outing in the mountains.

They have a 'good time' out with Grandpa, but it won't be long before they 'outgrow me'. :P

It is a quartz crystal that forms a perfect diamond shape. It is also very clear and sparkly. I did that when I was young about 50 years ago. We found a lot of them. Cracking open rocks, digging, it was a lot of fun and rewarding. It is in New York.

Steve explains it in his post, we broke a few rocks in NY a couple of years ago, & didn't find much, although their gift shop has some beautys.
Around here in OK, we just pick them out of the gravels in the creek beds, (found in the Ouachita mts) North of Rich mt.

When we went to the Herkimer mine in NY, we didn't have much luck, but I traded for a nice specimen in OK a few years earlier.

It was for sure, they knew it was gone because they piled dirt up to close the road. :P
