Don just got permission to hunt a home just blocks away from where he lives. He was not sure of the age and told me he estimated it to be maybe 1870’s.
I made sure Don had first dibs on where he wanted to hunt. He started in the front yard. I decided to let Don do the whole front and side first. So I just stuck with the treelawn. First coin I dug was a decent 1900 Barber dime.
I thought it was going to be a penny as it was not deep and didn’t ring up like silver. I promptly gave the first fruits to Don as an token of appreciation for inviting me along to hunt.
Shortly later after digging some clad I got a deeper “wheat” penny type signal. I dug down and saw a big coin sized object in the hole. Token I thought. Wow, was I surprised to see a large cent!
My first. It was a little bitter sweet as I knew Don had yet to find one.
I didn’t expect it because of the Don’s estimation of the home’s date. Talking with one of the old timers later in the day puts the house more in the early 1800’s. The old timer claimed it was the second oldest home in Wooster. Anyway, after a while the guy across the street asked if I had found anything. So I told him to come over and I would show him. We chatted for a bit and then he offered both his two properties for us to hunt. One was built in the early 20’s(my guess) but the other in the 1870s. I just did the front yard of the one home and found the token and the 1904 IH.
Thanks again Don. That red house and the others I am sure have more good stuff. Good luck.
PS- The war nickel and abalone button were from a previous hunt.
