This last week I picked up my four year old grandson at his preschool. I loaded up the car with two big trash bags full of aluminum cans. I told him we're going on a little field trip to a scrap metal yard. He thought the place was awesome. We watched a truck of scrap metal full of what looks like old refrigerators get unloaded by the machine with a giant grabber. It picked up three refrigerators in one grip and hurled them towards the pile. He got to see the cans put on a scale and it ticket printed with the value which was $4.85. They paid in two dollar bills and change, which I thought was cool getting two brand new crisp two dollar bills for him to add to his piggy bank.

That is Cool! I have been scrapping for the last couple years off and on. Last summer I took in over a hundred lbs. of aluminum cans. the scrap yard gave me a little more per pound for weighing in over the hundred mark. They also will give you your extra dollars in two dollar bills, and will give you fifty cent pieces. Also it pays to turn in the copper and aluminum wire, but I think copper and aluminum prices are down a bit now. P.S. brass is also worth turning in. I went to an estate sale and purchased two five gallon buckets with brass irrigation valves and after removing the stainless pins I had about 120 lbs. and I got over $200. s

Thanks for sharing the scrap yard pictures

Oh the joys of the scrap yard.
Seriously it's a wonderful world the scrap industry (Love/hate relationship)
Owned one for 13 yrs-built it up-got tired-sold it.

Well done on bringing the young Grandson on the trip to the yard.:hello2:
What boy wouldn't enjoy big trucks, grabby claws, breaking/smashing/and having fun doing it.
Crisp $2.00 bills for the savings bank-teach them young the value of recycling and they'll always eat.

Be careful of that barrel of clips he's standing by, that looks like stainless/aluminum and both will cut skin easily.

A trip he will remember forever.

Thanks guys. This kid really does enjoy places like this. I did keep a close eye on him, as there were quite a few hassards to watch out for. Good discussions on safety was also expressed.
