After 3 days of rain and sleet I was dying to get out and swing today. But I've been worrying about going back and trying to again get permission from the elderly lady who owns the field since she was a little hard to deal with last time. I've been looking for a way to connect with her, and I really got lucky today. After a little research I was able to determine that her maiden name was the same as my mother's, and it turns out she's from a nearby county where many of my relatives are from. She's also very good friends with an elderly man I happened to speak to a couple months ago, and it turned out I was related to him. I know all this sounds confusing, but the bottom line is that I may actually be a distant relative of this woman, which we both thought was very cool. Then to top it off, she's great friends with my neighbor across the street who we have a great relationship with. So it took friends and family to finally seal the deal. Anyway, permission was quickly granted and I spent a few hours in the field and did a lot of roaming around looking for another hotspot. I didn't think I was finding all that much, but when I got home I was surprised at all the keepers I had. I was unable to get any colonial silver this trip, but did make a really nice find with the recovery of a 1795 liberty cap cent in great condition. I also recovered a large and complete 1700s shoe buckle, but all the iron workings have formed one big conglomeration of rust and it'll be difficult to clean. I also dug quite a few buttons and buckle pieces, and a few other doo-dads. I think the hotspots have been hit pretty good, but I know there are some nice random artifacts and coins still hiding underneath that soybean stubble. And I need to check the shoreline at low tide as early 1600s pottery has been found there. At least the permission issue has been taken care of so that's one less thing to worry about. Going to return tomorrow to another nearby site where I dug a 1594 coin weight last time, and I'm really looking forward to that.

What a great day! Not only have you been the copper king this year but they're all in practically AU grade condition. I finally figured out that those brass rings were used in fabric buttons.......and don't debate me on that :tongue3:

he has to pass me to earn that crown :laughing7: ha ha. No seriously, he has caught fire ever since I called him that three letter word - I learned my lesson and won't be repeating it.

Sweet finds..really like the coin...awesome shape also !!

Congrats on getting permission....sounds like that site will keep ya busy for awhile this summer.

Don't poke a sleeping bear, Dan.......

awesome finds awesome backstory. I must admit that I am green with envy. mostly because of the dirt you are digging in. when I find a coin that old it takes me half an hour to determine whether it is a coin or a dandy button or just a green Ritz cracker. congratulations on one hell of a keeper

Not sure which is more impressive Bill--the great Liberty Cap or getting permission. Either way its a stellar day. I'd like to see a sweet Liberty Cap up top, so now the coin has another vote.

Awesome recoveries Bill. That Liberty Cap is incredible! :occasion14:
I bet it was like a giant cloud lifted when you sealed the permission deal.
Well done Sir.

Generally coppers around here are in bad shape due to fertilizer action. This was a rare exception.

Bill that is an AWESOME looking Liberty Cap and here is hoping you can get the shoe buckle cleaned, would like to see that if you do. CONGRATS on another great hunt and getting the permission locked down

That large cent is in amazing shape! Congrats!

You just can't beat having a great hunt with lots of targets and making a great find while doing it!

Coins like these will never make banner it seems like. I feel this is a banner find in the condition and the age of an early American coin like that. Congrats, Bill. Continued success to you buddy. HH
