After 3 days of rain and sleet I was dying to get out and swing today. But I've been worrying about going back and trying to again get permission from the elderly lady who owns the field since she was a little hard to deal with last time. I've been looking for a way to connect with her, and I really got lucky today. After a little research I was able to determine that her maiden name was the same as my mother's, and it turns out she's from a nearby county where many of my relatives are from. She's also very good friends with an elderly man I happened to speak to a couple months ago, and it turned out I was related to him. I know all this sounds confusing, but the bottom line is that I may actually be a distant relative of this woman, which we both thought was very cool. Then to top it off, she's great friends with my neighbor across the street who we have a great relationship with. So it took friends and family to finally seal the deal. Anyway, permission was quickly granted and I spent a few hours in the field and did a lot of roaming around looking for another hotspot. I didn't think I was finding all that much, but when I got home I was surprised at all the keepers I had. I was unable to get any colonial silver this trip, but did make a really nice find with the recovery of a 1795 liberty cap cent in great condition. I also recovered a large and complete 1700s shoe buckle, but all the iron workings have formed one big conglomeration of rust and it'll be difficult to clean. I also dug quite a few buttons and buckle pieces, and a few other doo-dads. I think the hotspots have been hit pretty good, but I know there are some nice random artifacts and coins still hiding underneath that soybean stubble. And I need to check the shoreline at low tide as early 1600s pottery has been found there. At least the permission issue has been taken care of so that's one less thing to worry about. Going to return tomorrow to another nearby site where I dug a 1594 coin weight last time, and I'm really looking forward to that.
