I know the pics are not great, but it really looks thin, and almost like a lid to something that had the edge folded over. I see pattern through the back side too?

A makeup, rouge, or some other kind of tin lid... container lid?

Just my two cents.

Could it be the top for a container of muzzleloader percussion caps?

Yes this is a very thin piece and the design is pressed into it. It reminds me of those big gold chocolate covered coin candies. It's a bit thicker than gold foil though. I can't figure it out.

What is the date on it?

This is a very interesting find that warrants more research.
I will certainly post if/when I find out what this piece is. I wonder if it was just a decorative cover plate on some horse bridal equipment or something like that.

Hi, Ed—

I believe that your find is one half of a type of token known as a "shell card" (also written as "shellcard"), which consisted of two thin, die-stamped metal shells with a cardboard disk sandwiched in between. Many of them were made to resemble gold coins. Here's an example:

Fantastic! That is great to know. You solved this one for me. Thanks to all for the help.
