Thin metal piece on beach

Found this little thin piece in beach sand. Has some patina - some parts of patina rattled off easily just riding in my car's console. it is about two inches long and thin, but strong. Can't tell if it was part of some jewelry or a piece of a clock, etc.

it's pretty thin but strong. perhaps it is a book mark with a piece missing around the 'tongue' that would make it clip on. Thanks, guys
