My mind goes strange places sometimes.. But here goes. I'm going shopping for new sneakers for my 10 year son today. He outgrew his boy's size 5's.. I thought darn, what am I gonna do with these.. They are too big for me. And I thought , darn next year I won't be able to wear his clothes anymore.. Cause they will be to big. ( I'm kinda a Tom boy ). 10 years old.... And his shoes and clothes are to big for me and he started to wear deodorant. At age 9. I won't even get into girls' rate of puberty these days.
So I got to thinking... Why are we getting bigger? If evolution is correct shouldn't we be getting smaller. We have less space then ever on Earth and we need less brawn then ever before... Yet teenage boys are now wearing size 14, 15 shoes. Mammoths were huge, dinosaurs were huge... Because the room they had to grow( oxygen levels or something too). But 300 years ago when when men could have used that extra strength n muscle for labor they were 5'4. And teenage girls can have babies as young as 11 ( yuk, I know). And the earth is way overpopulated as is. So why are we evolving backwards?

Let me see here, could growth hormones play a picture here in the food people consume? Why do you think girls at age 10 have such big boobs. Over population, when was the last time you flew, looked like a LOT of unihabited land to me. GodBless Chris

If you visit the Houmas House plantation in Southeast Louisiana, they have much of the original furniture. They explained that research has shown that over the past hundred or so years humans have gotten taller, which explains why all the furniture looks so small by today's standards. Got the same explanation at Washington, Arkansas colonial village a few weeks ago.

Probably related to the size of our cattle being larger with the advent of growth hormones given to them over the last century.

Hmmmm, I suppose your right . But that's so boring.... I thought there would be more interesting reasons .. Lol

Much much better nutrition is the answer. And much better health care. Of course we are not only getting taller, but now also wider!!

I was pondering the wider part just a few nights ago, especially in kids today. I think we can agree that they are eating more not so healthy foods and don't get enough exercise. Sitting on your ass in the house and playing video games instead of having to go outside and playing I think is a large part of the problem. That led me to think about the increased problem of diabetes in kids. Going a little further into the thought process I did a little research on the effect of vitamin D (the sun produces vitamin D in the skin) and its relation to diabetes. It turns out that vitamin D not only helps prevent diabetes but is believed by some researchers to help cure it. I have included below one of the links i found on the subject below.

Vitamin D and Diabetes

Sorry Holly, I didn't mean to sidetrack your original post but just found the relationship between the two interesting.

OK, Here is the outright answer that has been echoed in above posts, YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT !Food wise We live high on the hog compared to other countries. I will give you an example: In N Korea, where the dictator spends little to feed his people, they are getting SHORTER. Frank...

We're screwed . They spend too much time outside they will end up with skin cancer in their 30's...

That skin cancer thing is grossly over played. In my teen years I fell asleep on the beach for a few hours in the bright sun. I turned lobster red and the next day I had a hard time opening my eyes because my eyelids were burned so bad. Ever had your eye lids peel? Well now I am 75 and don't have it yet. PS: I have never used sun tan lotion and I spend a lot of time on the beach detecting. Frank...

However I'm betting your also not a pale skinned Irish man? The melanoma in your skin has a lot to do with It. I however am a pale Irish lass.. And have had precancerous areas removed from my skin... And I never could tolerate the heat and avoided the hot afternoon sun most my life.

Your part right. 1/3 Irish, 2/3 Bohemian. Strange thing, In my youth, I disliked the heat and cold didn't bother me, but somewhere along the line things changed. I can now take the heat and dislike the cold. I hiked 6 miles thru the desert at Vermillion Cliffs national Monument to see 'The Waves ' It was 104 in the shade, with no shade! Frank... The Waves. The barn is not really there, I inserted it in photoshop.

Ppsssttt... As you get older your thermostat breaks...( just a little secret there :) my grandmom use to keep the house at a sweltering 82 degrees in the winter , and wear a sweater and would ***** all summer cause it was 85 degrees out and to hot.lol

the boy question is easy enough. Basketball goal is ten feet high, they didn't have basketball back then

I do think modern life will have an evolutionary affect, but it hasn't been around long enough to make much of a difference, genetically, yet.

However, environment has caused big changes already, as noted. Taller, wider, longer life span, etc...

People live longer and become wronger, pardon the vernacular. GodBless Chris

maybe gravity was stronger then. I think the hormone thing is the culprit.as said before.

Holly, I am not sure how old you are but I too have had some pre cancerous issues dealt with on my nose. Dermatoligist told me to stay out of the sun as much as possible. She told me my skin has been damaged by the sun (even at my age) and to wear sun screen year round. She said if I dont I WILL develop skin cancer. So I listened and if I am going to be outside very long, I put it on...
