My buddy and I are thinking of meeting with a club that's about 20 miles south of us. I've seen some of their posts and they have some great sites. Just wanted to hear some people's opinions and pros and cons about joining.

Hi mate. This is from my experience working in the detecting game from my perspective from gold and clubs, though I think it could apply to any form of treasure hunting to be honest.
I dealt with several large gold detecting clubs.
The main issue I was aware of were vultures. Every club had a few vultures that only joined for 1 reason only, to glean info off of others where they have found things and to prey on their spots. Mostly the people were quite nice and sociable and I met quite a lot of very nice people from them. So if being in a social type thing like a club appeals to you then go for it. Just remember there will be vultures guaranteed, like the sun rises and sets every day, they'll be there. Keep your personal areas to yourself and be vague when asked where you got things.
A couple of guys I knew well id say found the majority of their nuggets through vulturing in the clubs going back and camping on spots themselves later and wiping them out.

I guess jealousy and greed. I will have to get a feel for the people. I don't know yet if it's hey let's share sites with each other or we all hunt whoever is over the clubs permission for everyone.

Join, go on a few outings, and leave if you don't like it.
I'm going to wait a few more weeks when my schedule gets freed up for the summer. This club has some great civil war sites that's the main reason I want to join lol

I was in a big club for years, no one shared where they were hunting. mostly a bunch of guys having drinks and B.S'ing. then everyone would show what they felt was their best find of the month and the club would vote on it. the winner got a plaque with the club seal, date and what was found . once a year was the big party which included a roasted pig , steamed crabs. And lots of beer. we also had a 100 table civil war relic show once a year. that was nearly 40 years ago , I'm sure things have changed.

Still sounded like a good time
