Hey all im new here to the site and im looking to plan a trip to nome for the start of next years season I was thinking of sluicing the beaches I want to go for a week or 2 to see what I can accomplish. I would like some insite if anyone has ever taken the trip there? is it still a decent location or do you have any other suggestions? I was trying to find out are there places to rent a sluice? I would buy all other equip needed. I would also appriciate any other info you can think of that might be helpful out there. and if you have done this already what was your weekly clean up? Im no stranger to hard labor and long hours so I would defiantly be able to run a good amount of material per day? Im not shooting for a stars for this first trip but more of getting a foot in the water..

Godric, welcome to the forum. I can't answer any of your questions but the one thing that came to mind reading your post was that traveling to nome would probably be pretty expensive unless you live close by.

yea im guessing it should cost around 3k more or less but its gonna be a "working vacation" so money isnt really the issue as long as i can rent a good sluice dont really wanna buy one since only gonna be there for a week or 2. I would like to see alaska and prospect at the same time but obviously more mining then anything so hopefully everything will workout

You might also consider browsing Sub-Forums: Alaska for information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.)...

Are you asking about renting a sluice or a dredge? A sluice by itself isn't all that expensive or that large, so it shouldn't be a problem purchasing one ahead of time, don't know about a dredge though, I would imagine there would be some left over from those that came and went broke and need to sell their equipment to recoup some of their losses. But with it being kinda remote I wouldn't be surprised if they jack up the prices on literally everything. From food to gas to prospecting gear. If this is your first time trying something like this, I'd start with an easier location first, and at the very least get used to the equipment. Can't offer much advice about Nome, but make sure you do plenty of research and try to hook up with someone who's familiar with the area.

In this scenario, I would want someone to "take me in" rather than go it alone. Rest assured it's going to be spendy. Brutal Beck got a job in Fairbanks with a group that has generations of mining experience. You might ask him how he did it but you have to hurry as he's leaving in 2 weeks. Good luck to you!

The way I understand it there are guys in Nome that rent the equipment, the permit to work the beach is $10 and your running. Some guys tent it while they are there but I hear that is scary and makes for rough sleeping. You want to go on the subway diet, which is 9 dollars a sandwich that you eat half of twice a day but it at least has all your veggies and you don't have to worry about food storage and bears. You will want at the minimum a .45 cal handgun and you should do very well. The president of the club I belong to has made the trip once and that was basically his plan for this year until he had a stroke 2 weeks ago on the claim I have been working. GOOD LUCK!!!

Another thing is that it costs around 2700 just to get yourself there if you are flying. It also costs around the same to barge a vehicle there. I would recommend getting a highbanker nozzle combo and a partner so you could split the fees of shipping a vehicle you could take turns sleeping in and take 6-8 hr shifts working the beach. From what I have heard if you work it that hard you could pull 1oz a day working in teams and you could do quite well. One thing to remember is to sell as little gold there as possible. Mail it to a reputable company and have them deposit it into your account and you will get paid a better percentage on spot price. Also remember that if you are going to ship a vehicle there to take as much fuel with you as possible because that shiz is spendy too.

Did I mention that I have a highbanker nozzle combo? LOL

The thing about being in Nome is you won't see much of Alaska. You will see the immediate area around Nome & the inside of the Anchorage airport (nice airport though...) If you want to see some country there are better options. I might suggest checking into Chicken Gold Camp. Rent a vehicle in Anchorage & drive up. Equipment available there for rent I believe. Tent camping available. You will see a LOT more of Alaska driving there & back. going there take the direct route throw Glannallen & Tok. Heading back to Anchorage make the loop through Fairbanks & Denali Park. Good gold, lots of history, & LOTS of varied scenery.

Hi Godric and welcome to the forum.
My suggestion since it will be your first time to Nome is join the GPAA and take in their Cripple Creek Alaskan Expadition. You said you figure to spend about 3k. I believe you can get 2-3 weeks there for less than that. I have never been there but everything I have seen on tv and read about it online and in their mags and papers it seems like a great deal. All equipment except atv's are furnished along with place to stay and food. It is the only thing on my bucket list to go there. since you don't plan to go until 2014 youn have time to research it and make rservations.

Good Luck!

Never been.... & I know "reality shows" are not always very realistic.... But from the shows I've watched, & the stuff I've seen on the history channel, one thing is certain, no matter the realness.... BACK UP PLAN!
Always have one. There have been people who figure they can just "pick one up" when they get there... & it bites them in the butt when that plan falls apart.
So definitely, do your research. Right down to what is or ISN'T available.
Lots of luck to you! I've always wanted to go, & I really Don't think you'll be disappointed. :)
Oh, & yeah... Hope your use to camping & own a gun. It gets "rough" out there, from what I understand.

I spent five summer seasons there and things are pricey and scarce.I havn't been for a while so it could have changed a bit. for the most part people want to be left alone and will leave you alone. I wouldn't trust to many locals with too much of your info or plans however.

Howdy Godric,

The only parts of Alaska that are tamed are the towns and even they have bears, moose and other 4 footed creatures frequently. All those animals run faster than you can and I don't care how fast you run they can easily catch you.

The outback country is varied, from open tundra to heavily tangled forests, to muck swamps and beaches. The bugs will eat a person alive if they are allowed to! Alaska is and can be pretty. Many of the people are nice and many are not even in small villages where Everybody Must depend on everyone else or else they will not make it. Some of the outback is a touch on the spooky side and folks have lost it out there and just gave up and left. I've been on a five day raft trip where the river was the only road. It had all sorts of delta like breakouts where the river would just split up and go different directions, I would not want to be lost out there.

One evening we had a moose walk right into our camp! The Moose, my brother and myself were all surprised! Since we were moose hunting and several days out from our put in point and the moose was a legal size we shot it. The moment the trigger was squeezed the fun was all over!! Skinning out a moose is a huge job for two guys, you must resharpen your skinning knife a lot as the Moose hair really dulls the blade. It took us about 6 hours to almost completely butcher the animal, some clean up work was needed the next morning, the scavenger birds were busy at work when we got up in the morning.

I would suggest you go to one of the GPAA sights or to some other pay to prospect location as it will save you a lot of time and effort and it will be more likely that you will come away with some gold as well as have a better time. The fishing is always good so I'd suggest you purchase a temp license but find out how long they are good for and what is legal to catch in the area you will be in before you get up there. Or said a different way, have the trip all figured out and Confirmed before you get there! Oh, do not shoot any bear, moose or whatever in the stomach! I do not care what caliber it is as it will only, umh shall we say upset them, and they will be transfixed on you. They will likely die in some period of time but not untill they have digested what they've eaten of you or in the case of the Moose it will really stomp the Guts out of you! Moose are Big, the males are protective of their areas during rutting season and Mama Moose is protective of her Calf so either sex will stomp or gore the dickens out of a person. But in general the state is a lovely place and the animals are neat to watch just not close up.

Plan ahead and go for it as Alaska is an adventure all in itself....................63bkpkr

I think too this would be a good way to get your feet wet, but not very easy to make money from the beach with the GPAA.

I met a guy that went, and he said the GPAA places you on a spot ion the beach and you are not allowed to move. Some rent 4 wheelers, find a better spot and haul their material in 5 gal. buckets. He was po'd., the show makes it look like you can prospect a good spot and set up, but that's not the way it is.

Still I bet it would be a safe way to get your feet wet, and learn a lot. Good luck.

Godric,
I forgot an interesting little point. In Alaska when Any Road crosses a stream or river, any stream or river, the road/highway right of way can NOT be claimed for mining so it becomes open to anybody to prospect there. My only advice there would to not undermine the bridge with your digging effort and also to fill in your holes. I've done this and in ~ half the locations I found some gold...........................63bkpkr

And don't forget your longjohns.....The begining of the year is likely to be a tad chilly.
