I know almost nothing about North American Indian stone tools, so please keep that in mind here! But this "find" appears to be some sort of tool. I'm probably wrong, but I need to know!

I found this small quartz rock today about 5 inches down in the ground. It was in the same hole with a square nail, so that's how I discovered it. I thought it was neat, since it has a triangular shape and is shiny on one side.

I was playing around with it and it seems to fit nicely on my left index finger (I'm a lefty). There is also a flat spot where my thumb rests comfortably. I could easily use this rock to scrape or chip something (another rock, deer hide?). Also, the pointed end is scuffed up.

So what's your call on this one? I'm going to keep it anyway, since I think it's a cool find. Have to go to bed now, but I'll check your answers later this AM. Thanks for checking it out!

not an artifact but if you like it keep it with that nail.....you found it and you own it

Nothing says artifact to me either. Keep looking though!

keep hunting and look for flaked stone that has a high silica content (glassy looking)......flints, jaspers, cherts, etc
look for flakes and flaked pieces.......
no disrespect meant here but the test that says 'it fits in the hand' is not a rule for calling something an artifact

keep hunting and good luck to you

Thanks guys! I'll keep looking. I'm still trying to find my first arrowhead. You would think after digging thousands of holes and walking endlessly through the woods that one would eventually show up! HH.

Few few artifacts that I've ever seen are ergonomically correct and those that are....just coincidence.

an idea for you;........look at some historical records from your state historical society...............then see about getting permission to walk (not dig holes) those areas........
.........you will probably score......good luck

That's a great idea! I'll leave the detector at home and look for surface finds at places that are off limits to diggers. Thanks for all the input, everyone!

7X to the third degree find. First find flint chips. Then post your saves!!
